Overview

New SR 40 GIS Basemap

We now have two (2) new interactive versions of the State Road 40 EIS Study Basemap. One LAYOUT VIEW and one GIS VIEW. The layout view is a printable 36x48" map with title and legend. The GIS VIEW has layers that turn on as you zoom in and focus on different items. Both require a bit of preparation before you can view them but the result is a set of very accurate and interactive maps:

(First you will need space on your "C" drive to install the data and the free ESRI ArcReader program to view it. That's about 100-150 MB depending on the options you chose.)

1) Install the free reader. Go to http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcreader/index.html and follow the instructions. This took about 5 minutes on my fast T1 line. Your download speed may vary.

2) Click here to download a zip file of the data. It's a little over 7 MB.

3) Then unzip the folder to your "C" drive. The resulting path should be C:\sr40_basemap

4) Enter the folder and double-click on SR40_basemap_gis.pmf or SR40_basemap_layout.pmf.

Here is a screen shot of the viewer and the full extent of the SR40_basemap_gis.pmf file:

A few notes:

While the magnifying glass buttons will zoom you in and out, the button brings you back to full extent.

The button pans the map in the direction that you move your mouse.

The button lets you click on an item for further information. For instance, clicking on a major city will give you population data. Clicking on a road can give you alternate names for the road.

When a check mark is "grayed out" in the legend, that means that the layer is not currently visible. When it is black, it is visible and you can turn it off by clicking on the checkbox. This is especially useful when labels or features overlap.

Here is a screen shot of the viewer and the SR40_basemap_gis.pmf file zoomed in. Notice the check marks on the left hand side.:

Finally, because the points of interests are only numbered, here is a quick reference (taken from the bottom of the layout view):
